Daniel Patrick Moynihan (1927–2003) was a social scientist, politician, and diplomat known for using scholarship and evidence to enliven public discourse and improve the quality of policy debates. His career in public service included cabinet and advisory roles under four different presidents, ambassadorships to India and the United Nations, and nearly 25 years as a senator from New York. Between these stints, Moynihan taught political science, urban studies, and foreign affairs at several universities and wrote 19 books. In 2000, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
In 2007, the AAPSS created the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Prize to recognize public officials, scholars, and civic leaders who carry on Senator Moynihan’s legacy of using informed judgment to improve public policy.
