Submit a Volume Proposal
Have an idea for a volume of The ANNALS?
The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science welcomes proposals from AAPSS Fellows and other distinguished scholars for future journal volumes focusing on matters of social well-being and public policy that are particularly salient in the current era of affective polarization and political tribalism.
We are interested in pursuing volumes that present research that brings a variety of ethical, political, and even moral perspectives to bear on public policy debates. We aim to model the ways in which evidence-based, principled disagreement over social policy can inform and temper public discourse, inspire well-reasoned debates among experts and policymakers, and point to pathways for political compromise. We welcome proposals for volumes that include a variety of ethical and political perspectives on current or proposed policies that are relevant to the work of both scholars and practitioners.
The ANNALS has been a forum for the free exchange of ideas among the well informed and intellectually curious since 1890. Each volume is a collection of 10 to 12 research papers and essays. Only a few other scholarly journals cover as broad a range of social issues and public policy challenges, and none can match the more than 700 volumes published by The ANNALS to date.

You should also feel free to reach out to one of the journal’s coeditors—Cecilia Menjívar, Thomas J. Sugrue, and James P. Ziliak—for advice and counsel if your interest in submitting a proposal aligns with their interests and expertise.
The letter should include:
- The names and institutional affiliations of the proposed special editor(s);
- A brief rationale for the volume and a summary of the issues that it would explore and illuminate, including an explanation of how the papers would advance scholarly research and how the volume would be relevant to public policies; and
- A draft table of contents that shows how the volume would be structured, what types of articles it would include, and the contributing authors that the editor(s) would aim to recruit.
