Academy Fellow Amy Gutmann, President of the University of Pennsylvania, will be awarded the Gold Medal for Distinguished Achievement by the Pennsylvania Society at their annual December dinner.
The Society’s Gold Medal for Distinguished Achievement is awarded to a prominent person in recognition of their, “leadership, citizenship and contributions to the arts, science, education, and industry.” The medal has been awarded since 1908 in commemoration of the Society’s 10th anniversary and comes with a $50,000 donation to the Pennsylvania charity of the recipient’s choice.
Robert Ciaruffoli, President of the Pennsylvania Society said Gutmann was unanimously selected for, “her remarkable leadership in Pennsylvania, and her distinguished representation of Pennsylvania’s ingenuity to the world.”
Gutmann has been the university’s president since 2004 and has more than tripled the university’s endowment during that time. She was named a W.E.B. DuBois Fellow by the Academy in 2002.
Previous recipients of the Gold Medal Award include former Governor Edward Rendell and Judge Marjorie Rendell, Former Vice President Joe Biden, and former Governor Thomas Ridge.
