On November 11, the AAPSS, in partnership with New York University’s Wagner School of Public Service and Johns Hopkins University’s Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, will host a panel discussion based on the papers and themes of a forthcoming volume of The ANNALS. The panel will explore how notions of citizenship and belonging in America have changed over repeated periods of turmoil and struggle, as well as the state of the citizenship ideal today in the wake of early November’s election results.

Polly Trottenberg, dean of the Wagner School, will deliver opening remarks. The discussion among panelists Jamelle Bouie (The New York Times, AAPSS Board), Tracey Meares (Yale University, 2024 Thorsten Sellin Fellow), and Robert Lieberman (Johns Hopkins University) will be moderated by Tom Sugrue (New York University, 2016 Walter Lippmann Fellow). Lieberman, Meares, and Sugrue are co–special editors of the forthcoming ANNALS volume, which is tentatively titled Citizenship and Belonging in America: Taking Stock at 250 and expected to publish in early 2027.

This is an event of the AAPSS’s Moynihan Prize initiative, and a reception will follow the panel. Please RSVP before Sunday, November 8.
