The volume situates the Great Recession in context with the collapse of housing values and stock prices, and describes the extent to which our country is still reeling from these events. Robert Moffitt of Johns Hopkins University gave an overview of his contribution to the volume on the social safety net; a panel discussion of the implications of Moffitt’s findings followed.

In addition to Danziger and Moffitt, panelists included Michael Tanner of the Cato Institute, Betsey Stevenson of the Executive Office of the President, and AAPSS Moynihan Prize Winner, Robert Greenstein of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Ron Haskins, Co-Director of the Brookings Center on Children and Families and Budgeting for National Priorities Project, moderated; Isabel Sawhill, Co-Director with Haskins of the Brookings Center on Children and Families and Budgeting for National Priorities Project, provided introductory remarks. The event was held in the Brookings Falk Auditorium. The entire event can be viewed on Brookings’ website.
