Information We Collect From You

Specific contact information for AAPSS membership (such as postal and email address, phone and fax number) is not published or otherwise made generally available; it is only used for AAPSS purposes. The membership list as such is never sold, rented, or otherwise provided to third parties. Only the names of institutional subscribers is made public and posted on the website in order for individuals to know whether they may have access to The Annals through an institution to which they belong. Some Academy members may from time to time receive printed or email promotions from the Academy or from SAGE Publications as part of a particular customer list – that is, by virtue of having previously ordered an Academy or SAGE product or service.

Email Addresses

In order to serve you well and expeditiously, the Academy and SAGE Publications ask for the email address of Academy members and journal subscribers. We use email addresses for important communications to members about Academy activities, projects, and meetings. Email is also used to confirm (and in some cases to deliver) an individual order, to communicate with a select group of members about a particular Academy project, or to contact a customer about a problem with an order or other matter. We also from time to time use the email addresses we collect to inform our members and customers of Academy products and services that may be of interest to them. The Academy does not sell, rent, or otherwise provide email address lists to third parties.

Telephone and Fax Numbers

The Academy may request your telephone and fax numbers so that we can communicate with you via those media about your order, payment, registration, or ticket purchase for an Academy product or event. The Academy does not sell, rent, or otherwise provide telephone or fax number lists to third parties.

Postal Addresses

We collect postal address information from you so that we can communicate with you by mail regarding Academy matters, deliver to your door any tangible products you order from us, and send you printed brochures and information about Academy events, products, and services in which you may be interested. The Academy does not make its general membership postal address list available to third parties.

Credit Card Information

At present, membership in the Academy and subscription to The Annals is made available online only through the Academy’s publisher, SAGE Publications. SAGE is one of the longest standing and highly respected publishers of social science journals and books in the world. SAGE must request your credit card information if you wish to use a credit card to pay for membership and subscription. The Academy maintains a separate capability for registering and paying for conference participation online. We use the information for the purpose you authorize and nothing more. Your credit card information is revealed only on a need-to-know basis to complete your requested transaction. See "Security" below for information about the security of credit card information provided to us online.

General website usage information – We gather, for internal purposes and in aggregate form only, some general information about the use of our website. We use web server logs and industry-standard website statistics software to, for example, monitor the number and geographical sources of visits to the site and to count "hits" on particular pages on the site. The information helps us improve the design and utility of the site for the benefit of users of the site.

Links – This website contains links to other websites. The Academy is not responsible for the content of those third-party sites or for their privacy policies and practices.

Security – Online credit card payments through this site are made via the industry-standard Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). SSL encryption (scrambling) is used to insure the security of your online transactions. It encrypts all of your personal information, including credit card number, name, and address, so that it cannot be read as the information travels over the Internet. To use this option you must have a browser that supports SSL (e.g.Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator)

NOTE TO OFFLINE PROVIDERS OF PERSONAL INFORMATION

This Privacy Policy applies to any personal identification information that we collect offline from the Academy’s members, project participants, and customers.
