The American Academy of Political and Social Science is proud to join in congratulating its Fellows Elinor Ostrom, the 2008 Robert A. Dahl Fellow, and Oliver Williamson, the 2000 Charlotte Perkins Gilman Fellow, and, on being awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Economics. Dr. Ostrom is the Arthur F. Bentley Professor of Political Science at Indiana University; Dr. Williamson is the Edgar F. Kaiser Professor Emeritus of Business, Economics and Law at the University of California-Berkeley. Ostrom’s prize recognized "her analysis of economic governance, especially the commons"; Williamson’s honored "his analysis of economic governance, especially the boundaries of the firm."

The AAPSS was founded in Philadelphia in 1889 to promote the progress of the social sciences. The Academy began appointing Fellows in 2000 to recognize and honor individual social scientists for their distinguished scholarship in the social sciences, sustained efforts to communicate that scholarship to audiences beyond their own discipline, and professional activities that promise to continue to promote the progress of the social sciences. Each Fellow is designated to a position named after a distinguished scholar and public servant who has written over the past century for The Annals. Dr. Ostrom’s remarks upon her induction in 2008 are available as text and as a podcast.
