Fellow Richard Schwartz passed away on October 10, 2017, at the age of 92.  A sociologist of law, Schwartz taught at Yale, Northwestern, and Syracuse universities, and at SUNY.  He was a co-founder of the Law & Society Association and the first editor of its journal, Law & Society Review. After his tenure at Northwestern, he served as dean and professor of law at State University of New York at Buffalo Law School. Most recently, Schwartz was the Ernest I. White Professor Emeritus at the Syracuse University College of Law.

Dr. Schwartz authored many scholarly publications, including Society and the Legal OrderUnobtrusive MeasuresCriminal Law: Theory and Process, and the Handbook of Regulation and Administrative Law. At Syracuse, he taught primarily in the law school, both in law and society and in “hard law” subjects such as criminal law, environmental law, and evidence. His scholarly interests included natural law, administrative law, and the impact of welfare reform.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Emilie; his children, and grandchildren.
